Get Started

New Here? Here’s Where to Begin.

Whether you’re curious about getting a ham radio license, want to get a mesh node on the air, or just want to know what all the antennas around Huntsville are for — this page is your starting point.

Getting Your Amateur (HAM) Radio License

You don’t need any prior experience or technical background-just a willingness to learn. Here is the path:

  1. Study for the Technician exam. This is the entry-level license and covers basic radio rules, safety, and operating practices. Free resources like the ARRL’s study guides and practice exams online can get you there in a few weeks of casual study.
  2. Take the exam locally. HARC hosts FCC licensing exam sessions right here in Huntsville — check the [Upcoming Events] section on the homepage for the next date.
  3. Get your callsign. Once you pass, the FCC assigns you a callsign within about a week, and you’re on the air.

Getting on the Mesh

Meshtastic and MeshCore are open-source, off-grid mesh networking projects-no amateur radio license needed to get started, just a small handheld device.

  1. Get a node. Meshtastic-compatible devices are affordable and widely available online — a basic setup is enough to get started.
  2. Join the local mesh. Check ALmesh for Alabama’s statewide mesh community and live node map, and look into DC256, a Huntsville-area group specifically focused on teaching Meshtastic basics.
  3. Start mapping and messaging. Once your node’s on, you can see nearby nodes, send off-grid messages, and start expanding coverage in your own neighborhood.

Join the Local Community

Radio and Mesh are better with people. A few easy ways in:

  1. Check into the HARC Friday Night Net — every Friday, 8:00 PM, on the 145.330 repeater. New voices always welcome, no experience required to just listen.
  2. Join HARC (Huntsville Amateur Radio Club) — Huntsville’s primary club since 1952, $15/year individual membership.
  3. Explore NARA’s repeaters — the North Alabama Repeater Association maintains the systems that make local ham radio possible.
